Wheaten Terriers

The Wheaten Terrier

The soft coated wheaten terrier would be considered by most people to be "high maintenance". This means that a lot of care should be given to it in order to maintain its stature. This statement also means that a lot of steps should be taken in order to care for the dog properly. So how do you care for your soft coated wheaten terrier pet dog?

Let us first talk about the coat. This is one of the most distinguishing characteristics of a soft coated wheaten terrier pet dog. In fact, when you take a look at the name, you will realize that the coat gives the dog its identity. Taking care of this essential part of the soft coated wheaten terrier dog can be quite a daunting task. This is especially true if you have just found out about the various standards that people use to judge the beauty of a soft coated wheaten terrier pet dog.

Frequent grooming is required to keep the coat shiny and to prevent matting. It also helps get rid of any accumulated dirt. You should comb or brush your soft coated wheaten terrier dog everyday to make sure that his coat remains silky and tangle-free. The coat also needs to be trimmed once in a while to preserve the "terrier look" and to allow a new coat to grow.

Besides the coat, you should also take care of the nails and teeth of your soft coated wheaten terrier pet dog. In case that you do not know what to do by yourself, you might want to hire some professional dog grooming services to do the job for you.

Another aspect you should concentrate on is the training. Remember to train your soft coated wheaten terrier dog as early as possible in order to ingrain in him the basics of proper behavior. There are several keywords that should come to your mind when training your soft coated wheaten terrier pet dog:

Consistency - be consistent with your teaching. Do not use different commands in order to get the same response as this will only serve to confuse your soft coated wheaten terrier pet dog. You should also be consistent in terms of reward and punishment. This will help your dog understand what you want to happen.

Tone - a soft coated wheaten terrier dog is actually pretty sensitive to the tones in the human voice. This means that the dog will be able to tell if you are feeling upset or if you are feeling impatient. You need to learn how to moderate your tone in order to avoid confusion with your soft coated wheaten terrier pet dog.

Timing -learn the proper timing of when to correct your soft coated wheaten terrier pet dog. The element you need during correction is surprise. You need to correct the soft coated wheaten terrier for a mistake right after or even before it performs the act. This way, you will be able to instill a sense of consequence into your soft coated wheaten terrier pet dog.

Caring and training for your soft coated wheaten terrier can be quite a bit of work. You will also have to contend with the energy inherent in every terrier breed. However, with patience, your efforts will be rewarded.

Crate train my 6 year old dog?
My Wheaten Terrier has serious separation anxiety. Her previous owner passed away and I've only had her since July. My job puts me up in a rental condo when I'm in town, and I have to bring her with me whenever I leave or she will tear the place up. Starting tomorrow I have to be back in the office for an eight hour day. I bought a large crate that she has room to move around in, and I can sneak back to my condo at lunchtime to walk her, but I hate to do it! She barks and cries the minute I put her in it. I just don't want her getting hurt or destroying a condo I can't afford to fix. What can I do?

Are wheaten terriers aggressive and hard to train?
I really want a wheaten terrier. The thing is, I've seen things online saying they are "aggressive", "dont like to be left alone", and I've heard people say negative things about them, like they are "hard to train". I watch lots of YouTube videos of them playing in the snow and playing with people online : I really want one. They all seem REALLY friendly and adorable in those videos, and quite harmless. But I need to know the truth very soon. In our family, there are a few people. Kids who really would like a dog to play around with and run with, but not every second of the day! Children (neighbors) are always at our house, and we have a very nice sized backyard. When the weather is good, the kids play sports and run around the house. We think that a Wheaten Terrier would like attention like that! We want to buy a dog between 4 and 11 months old. But is it really hard to train them? Are they aggressive? Can they be left home alone? When our family goes on vacation, is it okay for them to be at another persons house/dog care for a little while? The max. would be a week gone. THANK YOU SO MUCH for reading this and helping, if you do. We really appreciate it!

Which is better: Wheaten Terrier or Yorkie?
I may be getting a Wheaten Terrier ; or a Yorkie. I have no idea! I hear Yorkies pee EVERYWHERE since they have really small bladders. But then I hear that Wheaten Terriers are aggressive and hard to train. I'm really hoping Wheaten Terriers are not bad dogs, because they are the perfect size for my family ; and if I'm correct, a reasonable energy level, which isn't TOO bad. Please tell me any concerns and what I need to know about these dogs!

Do you think a Wheaten Terrier or Yorkie is good for my family?
*YOUR ANSWERS ARE VERY IMPORTANT. THEY MAY BE USED IN CONVINCING MY MOM TO LET ME GET A DOG* She thinks that we should get a Yorkie. I say no. Read about my family and tell me what you think: - We have young kids in my family, and young neighbors. They are ALWAYS playing with my siblings and running all throughout the house and in the backyard, all the time. - They play lots of sports in the backyard, for about an hour or 2, then take a break. - There are a lot of big neighborhood dogs that are always being walked, and my neighbors all have dogs. - We travel a lot in the summer, but during the school year we only take about 2-3 vacations, that are not very long. The longest vacation we would ever take would be 7 days. - We live where it can get very hot in the summer, and very cold and lots of snow in the winter - We are always playing in the deep snow, all throughout the winter! As you were reading this, I'm assuming you were really thinking that our family is perfect for a Wheaten Terrier! If you dont think we're perfect for one, I'd really like an explanation..... Please answer :) By the way, 2 people in my family are ALLERGIC to dog fur. Wheatens are good, right?
